Some information technology experts on Friday in Lagos said that adoption of 5G communication network would accelerate connectivity for living learning and business and dismissed myths of harmful radiation to human health. The IT experts spoke during a virtual public lecture, entitled: “5G Communication Network and Covid-19 Pandemic, the Myths and the Realties”,  organised by Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. Dr Toyin Enikuomehin, Head of Computer Science at LASU, said that 5G communication network would enhance cyber security, transform the ecosystem and virtual platforms in the country. At a press briefing on the performance of the administration on Friday, Idayat Hassan, CDD director, identified security votes as “one of the windows for laundering public funds”. Security votes are funds disbursed for tackling unforeseen security needs in the country. They are often transacted in cash and used at the discretion of public officials without an independent audit. Hassan said although the current administration has made some progress with regards to the fight against corruption, it still performs averagely and needs to improve. “They should submit legislation outlawing security votes at the federal, state and local government levels,” she said. “A ban on security votes should be accompanied by a transparent and comprehensive budgeting procedure and criteria for security expenditure that meets international best practices. “There is a need for greater transparency in the holding and management of these recovered assets.” The CDD director added that Buhari

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has commenced its Commercial Paper (CP) Issuance (Series 1 & 2 of N50 billion each)  under its N100 billion CP issuance programme on Thursday. The issuance is important to the telco, as it intends using the proceeds to its working capital and general corporate purposes in Nigeria. This issuance under the CP Programme represents MTN Nigeria’s debut in the domestic debt capital market.  The proposed Commercial Paper Issuance Offer begins today and is scheduled to close on Thursday, June 4, 2020.

Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo noted that no date has been fixed for school resumption because the government is still observing the trends, discussing with federal agencies, and putting the needed facilities in place. “We are looking at the pandemic. The main thing for us is safety first, safety second, safety third. If we are certain that our children are fairly safe, we will open school, ” she said. The commissioner also assured that online digital classes would not end after schools resume as Lagos state partners with Microsoft to train 18,000 teachers . Instead, online classes would be used to reinforce classroom teaching.  She added that the ministry has received devices from donors and would be giving the same it out to the pupils to aid their learning in the coming weeks.

According to Lagos State’s Commissioner for Education  Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, the ministry decided to use the lockdown period to improve the teachers and by so doing, partnered with Microsoft to train the teachers on digital literacy. Talking on the Eko Excel Programme, which was part of the administration’s THEMES agenda, Adefisayo noted that it had helped improve the teaching and learning experiences in the classroom between the teachers and pupils. While discussing plans of the current administration for education, the commissioner said that the state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has granted the Ministry of Education permission to replace retired teachers and prevent gaps in the system. “The most important aspect of learning is the quality of teachers and we did not have enough teachers to actualise the set plan for learning in our public schools,”  she explained.
