Kung Fu Panda 3's Jennifer Yuh Nelson to direct Darkest Minds adaptation

Jennifer Yuh Nelson is leaving the secret panda village for realer pastures. The Kung Fu Panda 3 co-director will make her live-action directorial debut with 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of Darkest Minds, the studio confirmed to EW.

The film is based on Alexandra Bracken’s YA novel series, which follows the fantastical journeys of Ruby, a 16-year-old girl who survived a worldwide disease that killed many, but left her and a handful with supernatural powers — and in a prison camp.

Nelson also directed Kung Fu Panda 2, as well as the opening sequence of the first movie in 2008. She was head of story on KFP1 and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and was story artist on Madagascar.
Chad Hodge, creator of Fox TV series Wayward Pines, wrote the Darkest Minds screenplay. 21 Laps will produce with Fox.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
