Bet Looks to Make Televised Film Awards Show With Abff Annually

Solidifying the relatively new marriage between BET and the American Black Film Festival, the network and org joined together again for the BET Experience during its awards show weekend in downtown Los Angeles. L.A. Live held the film fest, titled ABFF Encore, in addition to BET’s annual concert series and expos to expand its once music-centered weekend of events further into television and film.
We did our first award show together in response to #OscarsSoWhite, and this was the outgrowth of that,” said BET president Debra Lee. “It allows us to shine more light on what’s happening in Hollywood.”

ABFF Encore consisted of multiple screenings of African-American films, as well as panels featuring “Black-ish” showrunner Kenya Barris, actor-director Robert Townsend (“Hollywood Shuffle,” “The Parent ‘Hood”) and actress Tasha Smith (“Empire”). Kobe Bryant dead in California helicopter crash

Legendary NBA player Kobe Bryant has died in a California helicopter crash, reports said Sunday. He was 41. Bryant was among at least four people traveling in his private helicopter over Calabasas when a fire broke out, sending the chopper spiraling from the sky,  according to TMZ Sports . Zika-Linked Cases of Microcephaly Rise in Brazil

The number of cases of microcephaly in Brazil associated with the Zika virus has risen to 4,863 —up from 4,690 a week ago. Confirmed cases of the virus reached 641, while suspected cases now total 4,222, Reuters reported on Wednesday morning, citing the Ministry of Health. The Zika epidemic—which is now spreading through the Americas and prompting a dedicated response from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—is centered in Brazil.
