Robert De Niro's Hands of Stone gets special screening at Cannes Film Festival

Robert De Niro’s new boxing biopic Hands of Stone will get a special screening at this month’s Cannes Film Festival as a tribute to the star.


The actor will be in attendance at the screening on May 16, the festival announced Tuesday, along with writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz and costars Edgar Ramírez and Ana de Armas.

Hands of Stone stars Ramirez as Panamanian boxing legend Roberto Duran, whose career included famed bouts with Sugar Ray Leonard. De Niro plays Duran’s trainer, Ray Arcel.

“I’m excited to be coming back to Cannes especially with this movie Hands of Stone that I’m so proud of,” De Niro said in a news release. “This movie is uplifting, triumphant and a good time for audiences, so I’m looking forward to seeing my friends from across the world of cinema in joining us for this fun event.”

The Weinstein Company is releasing Hands of Stone on Aug. 26. In Tuesday’s announcement, Harvey Weinstein called the film “vintage De Niro.”

Kobe Bryant dead in California helicopter crash

Legendary NBA player Kobe Bryant has died in a California helicopter crash, reports said Sunday. He was 41. Zika-Linked Cases of Microcephaly Rise in Brazil

The number of cases of microcephaly in Brazil associated with the Zika virus has risen to 4,863 —up from 4,690 a week ago.
