5 Steps to a Successful Investment Journey

The most successful investors were not made in a day. Learning the ins and outs of the financial world and your personality as an investor takes time and patience, not to mention trial and error. In this article, we would guide you through 5 key steps to note in your investment journey and tell you what exactly you should look out for along the way.

1. Understand that this is a journey
As any good investor will tell you, to be successful in investing you have to understand that it is a journey and not a one-time event. You need to be in the right mind frame to prepare yourself for the long term and know exactly where you are headed i.e. your destination. This will help you plan your investment journey accordingly. For instance, when are you looking at retiring? 20 or 30 years from now? When you are 60? How much money do you need to have to make? You need to ask yourself these questions and know the answers. This will help come up with a well-detailed plan for your investment goals.

2. Know What Works in the Market

Read books or take an investment course that deals with modern financial ideas. The people who came up with theories such as portfolio optimization, diversification, and market efficiency received their Nobel prizes for good reason. Investing is a combination of science (financial fundamentals) and art (qualitative factors). The scientific aspect of finance is a solid place to start and should not be ignored. If science is not your strong suit, don't fret. There are many texts, such as Stocks For The Long Run by Jeremy Siegel, that explain high-level finance ideas in a way that is easy to understand.
3. Be in It for the long term
When most people hear ‘long term’ they get discouraged. Any good investor understands that investing isn’t a ‘get rich quick’ scheme and would tell you Rome wasn’t built in a day. Understand that your chances of success will increase if you are in it for the long haul and you stick with an optimal long-term strategy. It may not be the most exciting investment choice but remember you have a goal and it is important to stay on course without letting your emotions get in the way.

4. Know Your Friends and Enemies

Beware of false friends who only pretend to be on your side, such as certain unscrupulous investment professionals whose interests may conflict with yours. You must also remember that, as an investor, you are competing with large financial institutions that have more resources, including greater and faster access to information.
5. Get on the right investment path
Your level of knowledge, personality and resources should determine the path you choose. Generally, investors adopt one of the following strategies:
  • Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. In other words, diversify.
  • Put all of your eggs in one basket, but watch your basket carefully.
  • Combine both of these strategies by making tactical bets on a core passive portfolio.
Your personality, access to resources and level of knowledge should determine your choice. It is important that as an investor, you do not put all your eggs in one basket. The keyway of investing is to diversify your portfolio and make tactical decisions. The most successful investors usually start with low-risk diversified portfolios and gradually grow by learning from their doing and actions. As investors gain greater knowledge over time, they become better suited to taking a more active stance in their portfolios.

The Real Winner of the Democratic Debate: President Obama   More Sanders Snarks as Democratic Debate Gets Heated Democratic Candidates Court Black Voters at Debate Clinton and Sanders Walk a Careful Line on Women at Debate There were only two Democrats on the debate stage in Milwaukee on Thursday night, but they should have brought a third podium for President Obama. Coming back from a landslide defeat in the New Hampshire primary, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton doggedly criticized Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on areas where he’d split with Obama while duct-taping herself to the President’s legacy on issues as varied as foreign policy , health care and Wall Street . Sanders, for his part, did his best to hold his ground, justifying his criticism of the President and presenting himself as a change agent while pointing out Clinton’s own differences with Obama. Their heated exchanges over Obama’s legacy reflected how the President has b...

Oscar Pistorius Will Be Sentenced for Murder After Dismissal of his Appeal

A lawyer for Oscar Pistorius says South Africa’s highest court has dismissed the former track star’s appeal of his murder conviction. The ruling by the Constitutional Court on Thursday clears the way for a judge to sentence Pistorius for murder at a hearing scheduled for April 18. Defense lawyer Andrew Fawcett confirmed the Constitutional Court’s decision and said: “We’ll proceed to the sentencing.” Pistorius, who killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home in 2013, had appealed to the Constitutional Court, saying another court erred when it overturned a manslaughter conviction and declared the Olympic athlete guilty of murder. The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, though a judge can reduce that sentence for what the law describes as exceptional circumstances. Pistorius is currently under house arrest. [ Time ]

One of City's goalscorers was Kevin De Bruyne, who has had a season to remember at the heart of the side's midfield.  De Bruyne netted from outside the area for the fifth time this season in the Premier League, more t...
